How shared columns work

For compatibility with older model clients, for performance, and to let the server calculate view indexes in advance of people using the view, the shared columns are not loaded at runtime; the shared column design element is just a convenient way of modifying the column that's stored as part of the view design. When you update the shared column in your template, it updates all the views and folders in the template. You say that this did occur.

Then when you replace design in your application, the modified views and folders containing the new column design, would normally overwrite the ones in the app. Either this is not happening, or you're not seeing the results right away. Exit the application and reopen it, to make sure you're not seeing cached design elements. Use Domino Designer to check the modified timestamps of the view design elements in the application -- maybe the design replace failed to update them. Are they possibly set to not inherit design changes, or to inherit them from a different template?
